About Eunice

My Story

I love interacting with people. For me, people represent diversity through their unique life stories. Yet, people share many common and universal characteristics. Behaviours, emotions, thoughts, and perceptions are a few examples of what makes us human – and a reflection of their stories and the impact on their lives.

Since young, I have been drawn to figuring out the possible reasons underlying people’s behaviours. As a child, I found myself trying to guess and explain to the adults the reasons behind my younger cousins’ behaviours when they were reprimanded for being “naughty” or “lazy”. This theme of advocacy followed me as I was growing up which started me on my journey to find out more through my undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Psychology.

A Social Work practicum module during my first year of undergraduate studies opened my eyes to the diversity of real-world needs and the intricate life stories of various individuals such as ex-drug offenders in half-way houses, court-mandated clients under Child Protection Services and people with physical disability in an employment setting. This initiated my curiosity about the life circumstances of these individuals, their tenacity, their perspectives of life and what could be of help to them. Following completion of my undergraduate studies, I continued to explore and deepen my interests in working with various clientele groups as an Associate Psychologist before I eventually completed my Master degree in Clinical Psychology.

In my clinical experiences as an Associate Psychologist through to a practising Clinical Psychologist now, I had worked at a school for people with intellectual disability. I had also worked with youth offenders within the justice system (then Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports). On top of that, I had worked for 13 years at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) where I had the privilege to hear, learn and address the challenges of youths and adults with various mental health conditions, life stressors and/or existential concerns.

Following my journey at IMH, I moved on to private practice. I hope to extend my reach to as many people as I can to raise their awareness about mental wellness, their strengths and the idea about having a purposeful life.

“I” As A Clinician

A Therapist

As a Clinical Psychologist, I play the roles of a facilitator, a coach and working partner, when I conduct therapy sessions with clients. Each client is unique. I tap on the expertise that they and their family (where relevant) bring into therapy – their lived experiences, existing skills, past and current coping strategies, strengths, while complementing that with my clinical knowledge to help each client work on our therapy goal as well as to develop new skills, confidence, empowerment towards the lives that they hope to have. Please read more about “Psychological Therapy: How I Practise

A Teacher

Outside of the clinic, I enjoy sharing my clinical learnings with the medical students that I teach and to facilitate the development of their clinical communication skills during patient-doctor simulation sessions, in my role as a Clinical Practice Facilitator at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine.

In January 2025, I will be starting a new position at the Nanyang Technological University as a Part-Time Psychology Lecturer, where I will be teaching undergraduate students.

A Scientist-Practitioner

As a clinician, I adopt a Scientist-Practitioner approach. I keep abreast of relevant evidence-based approaches while making it a point to customise these approaches to specific clients’ needs and responses to the approaches used.

“I” as a Person

On a personal note, I consider myself an ordinary individual who share many common life experiences with the people I meet every day. These experiences include feelings of inadequacy, comparisons with peers, family conflicts, cherished moments, and the ups and downs of the workplace. This shared humanity has kept me grounded and allows me to better understand my clients’ situations. It also fuels my curiosity to delve into experiences that are less familiar to me.
Outside of my professional life, I find joy in spending quality time with my family and close friends. I cherish moments for reading whenever possible. Exploring hidden culinary gems, going for nature walks, and reigniting my passion for adult ballet (an aspiration I plan to pursue soon) are among my interests.

Here’s my story. What’s yours?
